BSNL to wipe out waiting list this year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) proposes to wipe out the waiting list for telephone connections in Kerala by December this year. This was announced by S.A. Thomas, Chief General Manager, BSNL, Kerala Circle, in his presidential address at the World Telecommunications Day celebrations held here on Wednesday. He said BSNL had provided 2.6 lakh Internet connections, including 35,000 broadband connections, so far. — Special Correspondent

Directive to Transport Commissioner

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has directed the Transport Commissioner to issue necessary directions for accepting motor vehicles tax from bus operators without insisting on production of receipt on the contribution towards the motor transport workers welfare fund, pending disposal of a writ petition. The interim direction was issued while admitting the writ petition filed by the All-Kerala Bus Operators' Organisation, challenging the action of the transport authorities in refusing to receive motor vehicle tax. — Staff Reporter

Entrance test for MBA course

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The entrance test (ASMIC MAT) for admission to MBA in colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala will be conducted at University College here on May 21. Candidates seeking admission to management quota seats in self-financing institutions should also appear for the test. Students who are awaiting the results of the bachelor's degree examination can also appear for the test. Application forms can be had from the city office of the Lourdes Matha Collage of Science and Technology, located in Lourdes Church compound near PMG Junction, on payment of Rs. 500. The last date for receipt of completed application forms is May 19. — Staff Reporter

Elected president

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: L. Radhakrishnan, Government Forest Secretary, has been elected president of the South India Chapter of OISCA International. A meeting which elected him decided to raise herbal gardens in 200 schools during the coming academic year. The meeting also resolved to organise a get-together of youngsters from all over the world on environment in CMS College at Coimbatore and set up a bio-agroforestry training centre at Bathery in Wayanad. - Special Correspondent

Army recruitment rally begins

ALAPPUZHA: A recruitment rally being organised by the Indian Army for candidates from Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts began at the Alappuzha S.D. College football ground here on Wednesday. Alappuzha District Collector K.R. Muraleedharan inaugurated the rally. The rally is being held to select candidates for non-technical and technical posts in the army. Brigadier J.S. Mankeekar, director, recruitment, in the State, Colonel S. Sreenivas, Thiruvananthapuram branch recruitment officer, and Lt. Colonel J.S. Bhist, Bangalore branch recruitment officer, supervised the recruitment process on Wednesday. The recruitment will continue till May 20. — Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The Satya Sai Seva Samithi, Haripad, will organise a Satya Sai Tapovana Sacharitra Satram at the samithi building at Panachamood, Haripad, from May 18 to 24. Kerala High Court judge Thottathil Radhakrishnan will inaugurate the satram at 9 a.m. on May 18. The satram

Therambil criticised

Thrissur: Mayor R. Bindu alleged here on Wednesday that the former Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan had inaugurated the Chembissery railway overbridge without informing the Division Councillor, Kolazhi grama panchayat representatives, Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala, or the district administration. Addressing a press conference, the Mayor said: "He made it a party (Congress) programme." She said it reflected "the autocratic ways and narrow political attitudes of Mr. Ramakrishnan."— Staff Reporter

NSS shopping complex inauguration

KOLLAM: The Nair Service Society general secretary, P.K. Narayana Panikkar, will inaugurate the NSS Navathi Smaraka Shopping Complex at Madan Nada here on Thursday. On the occasion, he will also unveil a 10-feet statue of Mannathu Padmanabhan installed on a specially erected mandapam on top of the complex.
