Medical, dental college students participate in rally

SHIMLA: Students from various medical and dental colleges all over the State staged a massive protest here on Wednesday challenging the Union Government's proposed reservation policy.

Hundreds of medicos gathered in the morning at the State-run Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital and took out a procession in the streets. Later they jammed road traffic for more than two hours on the busy Victory Tunnel Square on the main National Highway.

The IGMC students were joined by students of dental colleges from Solan, Kangra and Sundernagar. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College and Ayuervedic College Paprola doctors also joined the stir on Wednesday.

However, the Resident Doctors' Association and other medical officers did not boycott their duties.

The medicos shouted slogans against Union Minister for Human Resources Development Arjun Singh and burnt his effigy.

The public, including tourists and school children, went through a great deal of inconvenience due to traffic jams. The district administration and the local police though present in strength were mute spectators. "We have been advised to be polite with students," said an official.
