Rains cool Northern India

Bring relief to people reeling under severe heat wave

Chandigarh: Light to moderate overnight rains across the northern belt brought down temperatures and provided a much-needed relief to the people reeling under the severe heat wave. The mercury dropped a couple of degrees from the normal range at many places with Chandigarh recording 21 degrees Celsius and Delhi dipping to 23.7 C from yesterday's 25.2, weather officials said.

Chandigarh was overcast after receiving 3.6 mm of rains during the night. Ambala was lashed by 2.2 mm of rains and the minimum temperature touched 22.2 C while Hisar registered 22 C after it received 6.3 mm rain. Kalka in Haryana was lashed by heavy rains (24 mm) while Panchkula, Kurukshetra and Sonepat were among other places in the State that received rains.

The low at Ludhiana dropped to 19.4 C after being lashed by rains (9.2 mm). Amritsar received 5.8 mm rainfall and the low there settled at 18.4 C. Patiala received 1.6 mm of rain and recorded a low of 21.6 C.

Shimla feels the chill

In Himachal Pradesh, Kalpa town was among the cooler places recording a low of 7.5 degree Celsius after receiving light rains.

Shimla also experienced the chill, with the minimum temperature dropping to 13.2 C after the hill town was lashed by 16.5 mm rain. Sundernagar recorded a low of 18.2 C and the low at Bhuntar settled at 16.1 C. Both the towns were lashed by 15.1 mm and 3.8 mm of rains respectively.

Woollens back in Kashmir

Cold weather conditions prevailed in the entire Kashmir valley on the second day on Wednesday as intermittent rainfall forced the people to wear woollens and jackets.

According to weather office here, about 11.4 mm rainfall was recorded since early this morning resulting in a considerable drop in temperatures, bringing the much-needed relief to the people.

The maximum temperature dropped to 18.9 degree Celsius and the minimum 13.9 degree Celsius.

Rains lash Rajasthan

Rains lashed almost every part of Rajasthan on Wednesday providing relief from the fortnight-long blistering heat wave with temperatures dipping across the State.

Upper Cyclonic Circulation yesterday brought rain and thundershowers in majority of the State with Bharatpur recording a rainfall of 27.0 mm, Ajmer 10.0 mm, Dholpur 4.2 mm, Jaipur 1.4 mm, and Pilani 16.7mm.

Ganganagar and Churu which had recorded more than 45 degree Celsius for the past fortnight dipped to 39 and 38 degree Celsius respectively.

Jaipur recorded 39 degree C, Ajmer 40, Kota 39, Dabok 40, Barmer 41, Jaisalmer 41, Churu 38 and Ganganagar 39 degree Celsius. -- PTI & UNI
