Karunanidhi: quotas must for development
Special Correspondent
Tiruvarur:
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday said reservation in education and jobs for the oppressed classes was a prerequisite for their development.
Addressing his first public meeting in Tiruvarur after taking charge as Chief Minister, Mr. Karunanidhi commended Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh for his initiative. He said reservation for the Other Backward Classes and Most Backward Classes needed to be implemented all over the country, as in Tamil Nadu. "Wherever there are oppressed people, reservation should be implemented."
The Centre had tried to implement reservation and if any section had apprehensions, they should talk to the HRD Minister, he said.
Only reservation had taken the oppressed classes forward and the policy had to be continued to ensure that the weaker sections received their due share, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
