High Court to be approached for ban on `The Da Vinci Code'

Special Correspondent

  • Censor Board expected to meet today
  • Final decision will be out by evening
  • 'Government has to own up responsibility for the consequences'

HYDERABAD: After the Government put on hold its decision on releasing controversial film `The Da Vinci Code' by another day, Christian organisations in the city today resolved to approach the High Court for a ban on the movie.

Head of the Catholic Church and Arch Bishop of Hyderabad - Marampudi Joji also endorsed the view here on Wednesday.

"The film touches a raw nerve, attacking the very root of our religion and no sensible individual can accept this. The film is replete with untruths and cannot be tolerated," he maintained at a press conference today.

The Censor Board is expected to meet on Thursday in Delhi and take a final decision by evening.

On the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Prayaranjan Das Munshi's statement that the Government of India would not interfere with the final decision taken by the Censor Board, the Arch Bishop said:

"Everyone knows how the Board functions and overlooks all kinds of films."

The Arch Bishop cautioned that the film, if released, was bound to create unrest among the peace-loving Christians and the Government had to own up responsibility for the consequences thereon.

"It is highly deplorable that a film of this kind is screened, disregarding the religious sentiments of millions of citizens. We want a complete ban and nothing less than that," they said.

    `Ban dubbing'

Meanwhile, several Christian organisations urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to immediately stop the dubbing of the film.

"It has also been found that the CDs are available in the market and police should seize and confiscate the CDs," members of the St. Joseph's Cathedral Parishioner's Association said.

Meanwhile, Arch Bishop Marampudi Joji announced that all the churches of the diocese would begin special classes to dispel the `untruths' propagated.
