MCH fixes deadline for contractors to complete works

Staff Reporter

To terminate contracts awarded last year if projects do not start by June first week

  • Some 473 works sanctioned last year, only 43 taken up
  • Contractors halt work due to rise in cement, steel prices
  • Seek `compensation' in view of the steep hike in prices

HYDERABAD: The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) on Wednesday threatened to terminate contracts awarded last year for different works if they were not started or completed by the end of June first week.

The MCH Standing Committee that met under the chairmanship of Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy passed a resolution to this effect at its weekly meeting on Wednesday in the presence of Commissioner Sanjay Jaju and other senior officials.

Mr. Krishna Reddy explained later that though 473 works were sanctioned and contracts awarded in October-November last year, only 43 works were taken up by the contractors. Work was halted for past few months due to steep rise in cement, steel and bitumen prices.

The contractors have been seeking `compensation' in view of the steep hike but the committee rejected their demand. It also made it clear that the recent Government Order issued on price adjustment clause for these items would not be applicable to them. "They will have to forfeit their deposits if they do not start works by June 5. We will think of calling for fresh tenders if they do not fall in line," said Mr. Krishna Reddy.

    Illegal slaughtering

The panel also decided to curb illegal slaughtering of animals at the sites of old slaughterhouses. The Mayor said that ever since manual slaughterhouses were shut down in five sites, illegal slaughtering of animals was rampant. There was a danger for public health because of the unhygienic manner of culling of bovines and goats/sheep.

If necessary police help would be taken for closing down such shops. Slaughterhouses at Bhoiguda, Amberpet and Gowlipura would be modernised as permissions had already been obtained and efforts would be made to get permits for modernising Ziaguda and Ramnaspura slaughterhouses The Standing Committee also sought appointment of a special officer of the additional commissioner's rank for liaison with the Government for implementing resolutions passed in its meetings and also that of the general council.

    Road-widening

The MCH will be taking up road-widening between Nalgonda crossroads to Chaderghat and Mahaboob Mansion soon in order to facilitate the construction of Nalgonda crossroads flyover.

Commissioner Sanjay Jaju who visited the area accompanied by Malakpet MLA Malreddy Ranga Reddy directed removal of all unauthorised constructions in cellars on top priority within three months.

They also inspected the works concerning the foot over bridge there. Additional Commissioner for Planning & Projects K. Dhananjaya Reddy was present.
