L.B. Stadium tenants object to rent hike

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The tenants of Lal Bahadur Stadium resented the reported hike in their rentals by nearly 800 per cent which they felt was not only unreasonable but went against an understanding with the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) for a 20 per cent increase every three years.

Tenants association president A.K. Kaul said they were presently paying Rs. 3.25 per sq.ft a month but were asked to shell down Rs. 25 per sq.ft a month under the latest proposal. The steep hike was unreasonable because they were occupying the premises for over three decades.

An LPG dealer among the tenants, A. Krishnamurthy, said they set up the shops in the stadium when the SAAP was looking for tenants and businessmen were reluctant to occupy the accommodation.

Moreover, the ceiling of the shops was not of uniform height. It tapered to provide stands for the viewers within the stadium. He discounted fears of safety on account of the agency as there was no godown attached to it.
