Need to create more awareness on cyber crimes stressed

Staff Reporter

Reporting on cyber crimes is low, says R. Sreelekha

TELECOM BOOM: With the number of mobile phone users registering a record increase, Kochi city is fast becoming a favourite place for mobile majors to sell their new products. Most of the companies are targeting the youth segment for pushing their sal es.

KOCHI: Most of the victims of cyber crimes do not get to know that their systems have been hacked, since awareness regarding such crimes is low, said R. Sreelekha, Inspector General of Police and Managing Director of RubberMark.

Inaugurating a seminar on World Telecom Day with the theme `Promoting Global Cyber Security' organised by Idea Mobile Communications and Cochin University of Science and Technology, Ms. Sreelekha said that reporting on cyber crimes is low. She called upon the telecom companies to take up an awareness campaign so that the layman gets to know how to tackle a cyber crime.

In the U.S., there had been a loss of $3 million on account of cyber crimes, she said. "In comparison, only 500 cases of cyber crimes have been registered since 2000 in our country." In spite of the IT boom, the end-user is unaware of many issues concerning cyber crimes, she said.

At the seminar, B. Binoy, Marketing Head, Idea, gave a presentation on the `Emerging Trends' in world telecommunications, where the third generation mobile telephony will replace the systems in vogue. The country, which has the second largest telecommunication system in Asia, is growing at the rate of 30 per cent, he said.

Varghese Paul, Head, Department of Information Technology, Cusat, and C.S. Venkiteswaran, Director, School of Media Studies, also spoke.

The Institution of Engineers (India) and Computer Society of India celebrated World Telecommunications Day with a seminar on the same theme on cyber security. S.R. Nair, Managing Director, Team Frontline Ltd, spoke on the topic.
