THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation has given the nod to a Kochi-based advertising firm to set up bus shelters at 12 locations on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis. The decision was taken at a meeting of the corporation council here on Wednesday. The shelters will be set up at Ulloor, Kesavadasapuram, Pattom, Plamoodu, University College, Ayurveda College junction, SMV School, Thampanoor, Chenthitta, Killippalam, Karamana and Niramankara. The council was informed that this would not lead to any financial commitment for the corporation. The Local Self-Government secretary had issued a Government Order (GO) in June 2004, based on the company's application. The GO stated that the company's offer may be taken advantage of. In February this year, the town planning officer and the chairman of the corporation's standing committee on town planning had visited the locations. They found that bus shelters at the spots would benefit the public. The corporation could also generate revenue from advertisements on the bus shelters, it was pointed out. Following a letter from the Government on setting up committees to tackle harassment of women at workplace, the corporation has set up a three-member committee headed by its deputy secretary, with the health officer and councillor Lalithabai as member, the council was informed. The council also accepted the proposal of the standing committee on education to accept the scholarship applications of students who scored 70 per cent and above in the SSLC examinations held in 2005. The applications were forwarded to the corporation by the District Education Officer. It has been decided that the family income of students found eligible for scholarship should not exceed Rs.40,000 a year. However, the limit is not be applicable in the case of children of corporation employees who have applied for the scholarship. The corporation secretary has also been authorised to print the certificates to go with the scholarships at the corporation's expense. The council also approved the implementation of the project to publish on the Internet the corporation's master plan and its CTP schemes. Councillor Palayam Rajan presented a resolution asking that the pathway terminating at the corporation's shopping complex at Nanthancode be widened. Some councillors wanted the corporation to officially request the District Collector to take steps to tackle the drinking water crisis in the city, especially in the coastal wards.
