Ban on cycle-rickshaws to continue

NEW DELHI: Reiterating its 2003 order banning issuance of fresh licences to cycle-rickshaws in the Capital, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to bar plying of the conveyance from Jain Mandir to Fatehpuri in Chandni Chowk once an alternative mode of transport is put in place in the area.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice S.N. Aggarwal issued the direction when a Court-appointed committed to go into traffic congestion in the city and suggest measures to improve it submitted that the Delhi Government was planning to introduce sky bus service or monorail or compressed natural gas-driven mini bus service in the area.

Counsel for the Delhi Government informed the Court that it would take about nine months to implement the proposed project but the Bench directed it to complete it in six months.

Guard arrested

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old private security guard who allegedly escaped with Rs. 6 lakhs from an ATM in Gurgaon has been arrested by the South-West Delhi police.

According to the police, accused Kuldeep, who worked for a security agency at HDFC Bank in Gurgaon, had escaped with the money on April 12. He had told the guard standing outside the ATM in Sector 14 of Gurgaon that he had to check the machine as there was some defect. The guard stood outside while Kuldeep managed to take out Rs. 6 lakhs and left.

Interrogation of the accused allegedly revealed that he went to Siwan in Bihar and from there to Kathmandu in Nepal. There, he spent a lot of time in the casinos. He had come to Delhi only a couple of days ago. The Dabri police received a tip-off about the accused and apprehended him on Tuesday. The police have recovered Rs. 75,000 in cash from him. Further investigations are on.

Three arrested

NEW DELHI: Three persons allegedly involved in several cases of murder, robbery and vehicle-lifting have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. Six allegedly stolen vehicles have been recovered from their possession.

According to the police, two of the accused -- identified as Raj Kumar and Iqbal Ahmed -- were arrested at Nizamuddin on May 3 after a brief exchange of fire. Their third accomplice, Mehboob, had managed to escape. He was finally arrested on May 12 at Badarpur. At his instance, the police claim to have recovered the stolen vehicles.

Two held for robbery

NEW DELHI: Two persons allegedly involved in a robbery inside a moving bus near Kailash Colony on April 27 have been arrested by the South Delhi police.

Anil Kumar Sharma, an office assistant, was robbed of his wallet at knife-point inside a bus plying on route No. 445. Investigations by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police revealed that Lal and Tasleem gang were involved in the robbery.

Two members of the gang, Akil Ahmed alias Lal and Sonu alias Sohail, were arrested on Tuesday. The robbed wallet and a few documents of the victim were recovered from them.

CBSE results

NEW DELHI: The results of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)-conducted Class XII examinations will be declared on May 23. The results will be available on the CBSE website: www.cbse.nic.in or www.results.nic.in. Students will also be able to check their results through the Interactive Voice Response System and through SMS.
