This Day That Age
A Japanese expedition has conquered the 26,458 ft. high Manaslu, world's third highest unscaled peak in the Himalayas. The expedition leader, 62-year-old Y. Maki, in a radio message to the Nepalese Foreign Office on May 17, said success was achieved twice on May 9 and May 11 by two assault groups of the expedition. The names of the mountaineers who scaled the peak were not immediately known. This was Japan's third attempt on Manaslu in the past four years. The twelve-member expedition, sent out by the Japanese Alpine Club, set out from Kathmandu for its assault on Manaslu on March 11. They reached Sama on March 28 and were held up there for two days because of trouble with the villagers. Manaslu was first reconnoitred by the Japanese in 1952 and the next year came the first team to be beaten by weather.
