Staff Reporter

We will stand like a rock behind Achuthanandan: CPI leader

ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has vowed to take forward his fight against sex rackets and those who propagate communalism and instigate violence in the State.

Speaking at a public meeting at Alappuzha Valiya Chudukad on Thursday morning after laying wreaths of flowers at a martyrs' column erected there in memory of those who attained martyrdom in the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, Mr. Achuthanandan said the people of the State had great expectations of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Ministry. He asserted that those involved in sex rackets would be brought to book.

`We have to act to make true the dreams of farmers and workers in traditional industries who are now going through tough times.'' The people of the State have voted the LDF to power to escape from the terrible rule of the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government.

Mr. Achuthanandan said his Ministry would follow in the footsteps of previous Left Ministries.

The polices of the first Communist Ministry of 1957 and various Left Ministries that came to power in the State would influence the course of action to the new Ministry, he said.

Communist Party of India leader and Minister C. Divakaran, who spoke at the function, said his party would stand like a rock behind Mr. Achuthanandan.

Mr. Achuthanandan and other Ministers of the CPI(M) and the CPI arrived at the martyrs' column here after laying wreaths at the martyrs' column at Vayalar. Hundreds of workers of the Communist parties were present at the venue and the atmosphere was charged with slogans in support of Mr. Achuthanandan. A few activists of the People's Democratic Party arrived there with photos of their leader Abdul Nasir Maudany to welcome Mr. Achuthanandan.

Mr. Achuthanandan visited the nearby home of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising leader H.K. Chakrapani and reminisced the past along with him. He also visited his own home, Velikkakath house.

Mr. Achuthanandan took charge as Chief Minister later at 4 p.m. at a swearing-in ceremony held at the Central Stadium in the State.
