Bangalore: What the Nallan Chakravarthi Trust here has done at Seshadripuram Circle will benefit pedestrians, especially the aged and visually impaired.

The automatic traffic signals with a hooter, developed by trust members in association with Mass Technologies, Bangalore, is located in front of Sri Rama Temple on a trial basis. If this proves to be useful, it may be installed in other places.

Designed by retired engineer K.S. Iyengar, the device is timed to work every 60 seconds and the frequency can be programmed for other time specifications too as needed. Every 60 seconds, a red light glows facing the road and simultaneously a hooter sounds for 10 seconds cautioning vehicles to stop.

For the next 30 seconds a hooter with a lower sound operates indicating it is safe now for pedestrians to cross the road. This is an automatic signal that will keep working unless switched off, says Mr. Iyengar.

For the past three weeks this signal with the hooter has been working at Seshadripuram between 8 a.m. and noon. It has evoked good response from road users.

There are those who feel it adds to the noise on the road. The police want to observe it for some more days.

The police will receive suggestions from road users to improve on the design and make any modification to suit the use at other locations in the city.
