Susanthika to run in Bangalore leg of Asian GP

BANGALORE: Sri Lankan Susanthika Jayasinghe, an Olympic bronze medallist in the 200 metres, will be one of the star attractions in the second leg of the fourth Asian Grand Prix athletics event to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on May 22.

About 120 athletes from 17 countries will showcase the rich talent from Asia in the meet being hosted by the Karnataka Athletic Association (KAA).

Other than the Sri Lankan, a group of potential athletes from China and the Middle East will also be out to prove their worth.

"This is just a prelude to the bigger things to come, we will be testing our organisational capabilities at this Asian GP meet. We will be bidding for the Asian Track & Field championships 2009," said KAA president G. Parameswara at a press conference here.

Pune to host third leg

The third leg of the Grand Prix is slated for Pune on May 26. The performance in two of the three legs (first leg at Bangkok on Thursday) will serve as the criteria for selecting the Asian team for the World Cup Athletics to be held at Athens in September.

The event carries prize money of $1,500 for the first place, $800 for the second and $500 for the third-place finishers in the meet.

The Karnataka Athletic Association will organise an Asia Peace & Unity run, sponsored by Xerox, from Mayo Hall to Sree Kanteerava Stadium on May 21 at 8 a.m. Arjuna awardees Ashwini Nachappa, Reeth Abraham, S.D. Easha besides Olympian Pramila Aiyappa and a host of National as well as international stars and celebrities are expected to participate in the event.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will inaugurate the meet.

The events: Men: 100m, 400m, 800m, 3000m 400 m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin throw.

Women: 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 100 m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and discuss throw.
