Job fair at Ramananda Tirtha institute

NALGONDA: Swami Ramananda Tirtha Institute of Science and Technology (SRTIST) is organising a job fair in collaboration with Wipro on its campus near here on Saturday.

Engineering graduates from various colleges in Nalgonda, Warangal and Khammam would test their luck during the recruitment drive, SRTIST principal Talla Venkat Reddy said in a press release. - Staff Reporter

Health varsity entrance test postponed

VIJAYAWADA: The entrance test for D.M./M.Ch. (super speciality), which is scheduled for May 28, is postponed to June 16. The counselling for MPT courses scheduled for June 3 is postponed indefinitely, according to Registrar of Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences P. Jayakar Babu. - Staff Reporter

Aasha rally flagged off

NIZAMABAD: Mayor D. Sanjay flagged off a rally jointly organised by Youth Congress workers of Darpally mandal and Sirivennala, a social service organisation, as part of the ongoing campaign against AIDS - Aasha - in Nizamabad on Thursday.

Dharna against YSR's decision

HYDERABAD: Mala Mahanadu has given a call for dharna before Mandal Revenue Offices and district Collectorates on May 22 in protest against the decision of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to lead an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking a Constitutional amendment to provide categorisation of SCs.

Addressing a news conference here on Thursday, its State president J. Prabhakar Rao and other leaders said Dr. Reddy was going against a decision of the Political Affairs Committee of Parliament to get Dalit issues studied by a national-level team. - Special Correspondent

SAAP to set up kabaddi academy

KARIMNAGAR: The Sports authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has decided to set up Kabaddi academy for boys in Karimnagar for the year 2006-07.

Accordingly, it has decided to conduct selection trails on May 26 and 27 at Ambedkar Stadium in the town. Interested candidates were asked to report at the stadium, according to a press release.

Monsoon advances further

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Southwest monsoon has further advanced into some parts of southwest Bay and some more parts of southeast Bay, south Andaman Islands and most parts of Andaman sea.

According to a bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here on Thursday, conditions are favourable for further advance into some more parts of southwest and southeast Bay and parts of east-central Bay. - Staff Reporter

Struck dead by lightning

KURNOOL: A worker at Telugu Ganga canal was struck by lightning near Rudravaram in Kurnool district on Thursday. The worker, identified as Chandraiah, died on the spot. He hailed from Nandavaram. - Staff Reporter

Woman from State hurt in bid to escape raid

Dubai: An Indian woman is recovering from injuries she sustained after jumping two floors of an apartment building in Bahrain in a bid to flee from the police during a vice raid.

A native of Andhra Pradesh, she sustained two fractured legs and a fractured right heel.

"She is currently recuperating at Salmaniya Medical Complex and underwent surgery on her right leg yesterday and on her left leg last week," the `Gulf Daily News' said.

The 35-year-old mother of two came to Bahrain three years ago and was employed as a housemaid for a Bahraini family, but also worked in a prostitution ring, the paper said. - PTI

Kavitha Jayanthi tomorrow

TIRUPATI: As a prelude to Tirupati Utsavalu, a poetic programme -- Kavitha Jayanthi -- would be conducted by the organisers on May 20 to trace the mythological and historical background of Tirupati and Tirumala. Leading telugu literary figures like Uppala Sathyanarayanacharya, Pulikanti, Elluri, Rasaraju, Kolakaluri Madhujyothi, Vempelle Abdul Khadar and others are expected to participate in the programme. On the next day there would be `Naatyavadhanam.' -Staff Reporter

`Bank on your postman' scheme

KURNOOL: The Postal Department will introduce "Bank On Your Postman" scheme on May 23, which would facilitate the postal savings bank account holders to withdraw amounts through their respective postmen. The postal department will charge Rs. 20 for each transaction and the amount would be delivered at the doorstep, according to a press note by postal Superintendent M. H. Hanumantha Rao.- Staff Reporter

Two killed, 30 hurt in road accidents

KURNOOL: Two persons, including a schoolboy, died when they were knocked down by a truck near Yarraguntla on the National Highway between Nandyal and Allagadda in Kurnool district on Thursday.

According to reports, Bhanu Murthy, (40), and J.R. Vinay Kumar, (12), were going on a scooter when the truck hit their vehicle. Both of them died on the spot. In another accident at Arekal near Adoni, 30 persons of a marriage party were injured when the lorry in which they were travelling overturned.

Doctors' hail UGC exemption

NELLORE: Sri Venkateswara University Doctorates Association has welcomed the University Grants Commission's (UGC) decision to exempt candidates with a PhD or M Phil degrees from appearing for the mandatory National Eligibility Test (NET) for the post of lecturers. In a statement, association president Dr Y V Rami Reddy on Thursday said that the commission's decision would give fillip to research activity in all universities.- Staff Reporter
