ON A MISSION: Employees of the Municipal Corporation of Anantapur staging a protest in front of the civic body office at Anantapur on Thursday.

ANANTAPUR: Employees and workers of the Municipal Corporation of Anantapur staged a dharna in front of the civic body's office on Thursday demanding arrest of the persons who allegedly attacked a building inspector on Wednesday.

They boycotted duties for the second day.

The civic staff under the aegis of Anantapur Municipal Employees and Workers Association also took out a procession from the municipal office to the DRDA guesthouse, where new District Collector Kadmiel Dasari was put up, by covering Subhash Road and Tower Clock.

Municipal workers' associations affiliated to CITU and AITUC and teachers' unions UTF and STU expressed solidarity by participating in the procession and dharna.

The employees and workers unions condemned attacks on the civic staff and demanded stern action against the culprits. They also asked the Commissioner to participate in the protest, but he did not turn up.

    Phased agitation

They would take up a phased agitation disrupting the basic services like water supply and sanitation, if action was not taken against the attackers of building inspector. Speakers at the protest alleged that some sections were trying to create a fearful atmosphere and have their say in the civic body by resorting to attacks on the civic staff. Responding to a representation by the civic staff the Collector assured them that measures would be taken by talking to the SP and DSP to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The Collector directed Anantapur RDO A.V. Ramprasad to follow the matter.

Leaders of the municipal employees and workers association K. Balasubramanyam, Noor Ahmed and Krishnamurthy, CITU leader K.A. Ratnaiah, UTF leaders Ramesh and Nagendrababu, STU leader M.C. Venkataswamy, independent Corporators Gampanna and Ramakrishna Reddy participated.
