Summer workshop for children

Staff Reporter

They were trained in making pretty and useful things

CHENNAI: Crooked jute baskets and clay vases painted happy colours with beaming flowers were the results of one week of industriousness by children participating in Sishlok, a summer workshop.

About 30 children from the lower economic strata were trained in making pretty and useful things such as shopping bags and envelopes from cheap material.

Archana Chandresh and Priya Ashwin from Sishlok also taught them exercises, yoga and intra-personal skills for three hours every day. To ensure the children made it to the venue, they were picked up and dropped off.

The works of art were proudly displayed at Lalit Kala Akademi, along with flashy red hearts that declared `explore', `excel' and `exhibit'. Which is just what the children did, judging by the pleasure on the faces of the visiting parents. Sishlok is an organisation for child progress that often conducts workshops with the British Council. Call 93812 02785 for details.
