RAIN-SOAKED: One of the works of N.P. Jayan

BANGALORE: Await the arrival of "Malabar Monsoon" on Friday, ahead of the season, at the city's Oxford Book Store inside the Leela Palace on Airport Road.

Capturing the essence of the monsoon beauty of Kerala's picturesque, yet largely unexplored Malabar region, award-winning photographer N.P. Jayan showcases his collection of rain-soaked pictures at an exhibition.

"Malabar Monsoon" will be the first in a series of seven exhibitions titled "Mazhavillu - the seven-course visual feast" planned by the photographer.

The exhibition, to be inaugurated by Gauri Lankesh and Kavitha Lankesh, film personalities, will be on till May 28.

But to catch a glimpse of the photographer's works, his website, www.malabarphoto.com, could also be accessed.

Awards

Jayan has won the Union Government's Photo Division National Award in 2000 and 2004; The Sanctuary Asia Magazine's International Wildlife Photography Award; The Government of Kerala's Manaveeyam Award; The State Bank of Travancore - National Sports Photography Award; The Green Vision 2003 Award, besides being adjudged the Photographer of the year, 2001.

About his work and chosen field, he said, "Even as I love training my camera on life and times as a photojournalist, there is nothing I love more than being in the company of nature. Not surprising, perhaps, for someone who was born in and grew up near a forest teeming with wild animals - they still amble in and out of our little home's courtyard, on occasions."

Imagery

In his works, Jayan explores the imagery that is at once sensual and surreal and symbiotic. Through his lens he explodes with a rainbow of images of the people, art and culture, history, rivers, rains, oceans, nature and wildlife of Malabar, Kerala's northern region.
