This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru has described the Buddha as the greatest Indian in recorded history. In a message to the Buddha Jayanti Celebrations Committee, he says, "In this age of the atom bomb, we realise afresh the significance of the Buddha's message of peace. There is a peculiar significance in the celebration in India and elsewhere of the Buddha Jayanti this year. We in India are more intimately concerned with this celebration than perhaps others because the Buddha was the product of our country, a fine flower that grew out of the soil of India. He might well be considered the greatest Indian in recorded history. But he was something much more than an Indian and his message was for the world and for the ages to come."
