dated May 20, 1956: Bertrand Russell 84

Bertrand Russell (Earl Russell), British philosopher, mathematician and Nobel Prize winner, celebrated his 84th birthday quietly with his family at his Richmond home, near London, on May 18. He said he was working on a new book - portraits from memory, a collection of sketches of people he has known, which he expects to publish in the autumn. Russell, a Socialist, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950 for his writings, which have dealt with politics and mathematics as well as philosophy.
