Principal Correspondent
BANGALORE: Ushas, Usha School of Athletics' newsletter, was formally launched by Infosys chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy at a simple function at the Infosys conference hall on Friday. The quarterly, brought out by the friends of Usha and edited by Usha's husband V. Srinivasan, is all about the dreams and goals of Usha and her School of Athletics, which was inaugurated in May 2002 by the then Union Sports Minister, Uma Bharati. Infosys is extending all support to the School as well as Usha's goals. At the release function, Mr. Narayana Murthy spoke extensively about the `golden girl' of Indian athletics and the pride she brought India. "It's a privilege to share the dais with Usha," is what one stalwart said about the other. Lauding Usha's effort to produce many more like her, the chairman told her that Infosys would support the cause in all possible ways. "Our role, however, will be miniscule in comparison to what she has taken up. How she will motivate the young and provide the impetus to perform at the world stage is a much bigger role than what we all can do," Mr. Narayana Murthy said.
Support needed
Mohandas Pai, CFO, Infosys, the man who has been providing unstinted support to the School right from its inception, along with a host of others, stressed the need for everyone to help the cause. Usha said she was set to produce an Olympic medallist by the 2012 London Olympics. "Some of the 11 wards training in the School have already achieved Asian level in their performances and in the next five years, there is no reason why one or more of them can touch Olympian heights," said the `Payyoli Express'.
