Supreme Court notice to NHRC on compensation

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the quantum of compensation granted by it to the next of kin of those who died in custody and illegally cremated by security forces in Punjab.

A Bench, comprising Justices K.G. Balakrishnan and D.K. Jain, issued the notice on a Special Leave Petition filed by Paramjit Kaur on behalf of the Committee for Coordination on Disappearances in Punjab.

Ms. Kaur said Rs. 2.5 lakh, granted by the NHRC on November 11, 2004, was not enough.

She urged the court to direct the Punjab Government to give Rs. 10 lakh each to the families, keeping in mind its recent order, granting Rs. 10 lakh as compensation in a case relating to the killing of her husband — former Secretary-General of the Akali Dal's human rights wing Jaswant Singh Khalra.

Ms. Kaur requested the court to direct the NHRC to evolve a system to determine the amount of compensation after considering the circumstances .
