Da Vinci Code

The CBFC's decision to release the film The Da Vinci Code with an `A' certificate and a disclaimer at the beginning and end of the movie is welcome. The Government, in deference to the sentiments of the affected, has handled the issue with care.

Shirley Jayarani,

The film is set to evoke laughter with its disclaimer. Don't the adult viewers already know that The Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction? The Christian leaders succeeded in getting free publicity for the movie.

When the novel has sold more than a million copies in India, the sudden awakening of some sections to the bloodline of Jesus Christ is surprising. It is up to us to accept or reject the movie. There is no point in asking for a total ban.

It is true that the movie is a work of fiction and the disclaimer will testify to that. But the question is do we need to have a movie of this nature? Will it not affect the sentiments of Christians? If one writes falsehood about our leaders and calls it a fiction, will they accept it?

T. Charles John Bhaskar,

No one has the right to play with the sentiments of millions of Christians. Christ is revered by Muslims too. The authorities should have handled the issue with greater care.

Mark Twain said, "A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." Dan Brown's work may qualify as pure fiction if the Catholic Church, Opus Dei, Jesus Christ, and St. Mary Magdalene were all fictitious, which they are not. When Hindus have the right to express their opposition to movies such as Fire and Water, Muslims to The Satanic Verses and recent Danish cartoons of Prophet Muhammad, why should the Catholic Church and its faithful not express their genuine opposition to a blatantly blasphemous diatribe?

Has the systematic teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution in schools hurt the sentiments of Christians or confused their understanding of the Biblical version of the origin of man? But for the publicity given to the film by some Christian bishops, not even a tenth of Indian Christians would have come to know of it.

Y. Collison,
Chennai
