Welcome move

The Government's proposal to reserve seats for OBCs in higher education is welcome. Reservation is like giving medicine and special diet to a sick child in the family. The people of India constitute a family. It is our national duty to provide special opportunities to those who have for historic reasons fallen behind others. The true spirit of social justice demands such reservation to each identifiable group in proportion to its population and degree of backwardness.

The fire the reservation issue has ignited is assuming ominous proportions. Reservation is very much in order, considering the unjust treatment meted out to the reserved class in the past. But the Government should have displayed foresight. The idea of increasing the number of seats is easier said than done going by the number of the colleges.

Anti-reservation ideology is based on social Darwinism where the under-privileged are forced out of the arena by the privileged few. Many who graduate from institutes built with taxpayers' money, work for private organisations or in other countries. Why is there no uproar over this? In my career in private firms that ruthlessly demand quality, I have come across mediocrity that is too gross to describe. But the same people talk about the `havoc' of reservation.

We have to thank the British for banning sati by force of law. Similarly to ensure social progress, we need effective laws. When a socially backward person progresses along the hierarchal ladder, he gradually brings along with him many of his brethren. Reservation is a way forward as far as our country is concerned. I support the Government's move to reserve seats but it should ensure that the deserving candidates get the benefits.

Tony George Jacob,
New Delhi
