THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister Binoy Viswom, who is tipped to receive the Forests and Environment portfolio, on Friday, directed the forest officials to initiate strong action against the sandalwood mafia operating in the State. An official press release said that he had called a meeting of top forest officials to discuss media reports stating that the sandalwood mafia had intensified its activities in the Marayur region in Idukki district to make full use of the power vacuum created by the change of Government. The officials reported to the Minister that 30 sandalwood trees were cut and taken away by the sandalwood smugglers since March 1, this year.
