AIYF activists stage `rail roko' in protest against fuel price hike

Staff Reporter

Urge Central Government to withdraw the proposal immediately

FOR THE PEOPLE: Activists of the AIYF detaining the Kurla-Coimbatore Express in Anantapur on Friday.

ANANTAPUR: Activists of the All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) detained the Kurla-Coimabatore Express for about an hour here on Friday in protest against the proposed hike in the prices of LPG, petrol and diesel.

They wanted the Centre to withdraw the proposal immediately.

Speaking on the occasion, AIYF district president N. Sriramulu and general secretary G. Gopal stated that the UPA Government had hiked the prices of fuel several times during the last two years, blaming it on the rise in the prices of crude oil in the international oil market.

As a result, the poor and the middle class were being burdened heavily.

Plea to Centre

They requested the Centre to form a price stabilisation board to control the hike in prices. They suggested cut in the duties on fuel to keep the impact of international price fluctuations away from the people of the country. They also sought a review of the CNG price.

The AIYF leaders felt that any hike in the price of LPG cylinders would force the poor using subsidised fuel to abandon the fuel use and search for other alternatives, though it would be highly difficult.

They reminded that the UPA election manifesto of 2004 had clearly stated that poor and middle class would be shielded from the burden of price rise.
