ALL LOST: A fire at the Mullima Nagar slum near Foreshore Estate destroyed huts and possessions of about 60 families on Friday morning. PHOTO: S.R. RAGHUNATHAN.
CHENNAI: Forty huts housing about 60 families in Mullimma Nagar slum in Pattinapakkam near Foreshore Estate were destroyed in a fire on Friday. No life was lost though property was damaged. According to fire personnel who received a call for help around 11 a.m., the fire raged for over an hour and six fire tenders were employed to put out the fire. K.R. Periyakaruppan, Minister for Slum Clearance Board and Fisheries Minister K.P.P. Sami, visited the affected people in the slum area.
MLA visits
Mylapore MLA, S. Ve. Shekher, Deputy Mayor of Chennai Corporation, R. Thiagarajan, Commissioner, M.P. Vijayakumar, District Collector, N. Muruganandham, Corporation Council opposition leader, C.V. Malayan and council members A.K. Jagadeesan, Ullasavelan and Selvi Soundararajan also visited the affected families. They have been assured food and medical help, said a release from Chennai Corporation.
