Squall brings down temperature

NEW DELHI: Beginning on a cloudy note, Friday saw a short spell of rain that brought much relief to Delhiites from the heat. While the day might have begun on a dark note, it turned sunny quickly, but a squall and dust storm in the evening lowered the temperatures considerably.

"The rain was due to upper air cyclonic circulation over North Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Central Pakistan and Punjab. We expect this to continue for the next 24 hours," said an official of the Delhi Metrological Department.

Bringing down the temperature by seven degrees, the wind speed in the dust storm touched 60 km per hour. Strong gusts of winds in the evening took most people coming back from office by surprise. However, the storm quickly died down.

"The temperature was 35.6 degrees Celsius in the evening before the squall. But it fell to 28 degrees immediately after," said the Metrological Department.

Demand for Women's Reservation Bill

NEW DELHI: Several women members in the Rajya Sabha on Friday demanded early tabling of the Women's Reservation Bill.

Raising the issue during zero hour, BJP member Maya Singh said the United Progressive Alliance government had completed two years in office but the Bill had not seen the light of the day. "The current session of Parliament is ending on Tuesday and from the list of Bills in the schedule it is apparent that the Women's Bill is not coming in this session of Parliament. Does the government want that this issue should also come to the streets?" she asked.

Associating with the demand, CPI-M leader Brinda Karat said some of the women's groups had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue on Friday.

SHO transferred

NEW DELHI: The Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sabzi Mandi police station, Inspector Ranbir Singh, was on Friday transferred to the Special Branch of the Delhi police following allegations that he mishandled the gang-rape case of a 16-year-old girl.

The Additional SHO of the police station in his complaint to the Union Home Ministry recently had alleged that the SHO had accepted bribe in the gang-rape case.

Apart from Ranbir Singh's transfer, Inspector Jai Kumar Sharma has been transferred from North-West Delhi to the Tilak Nagar police station as SHO, Inspector Rajender Bakshi from Tilak Marg to the Kotla Mubarakpur police station, Inspector Dhir Singh from Kotla Mubarakpur to Traffic, and Inspector Netra Pal has been transferred from the post of Additional SHO New Delhi railway station to Karol Bagh as Additional SHO.
