dated May 22, 1956: DMK to contest elections

The DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham) Confederation, meeting in Tiruchirapalli on May 20, decided to contest the ensuing general elections in accordance with the verdict of the test ballot taken with a view to sounding public opinion. The ballot indicated that 56,942 persons voted for the DMK participating in the elections and 4,203 against. The announcement of the verdict by Mr. R. Nedunchezhiyan, President of the Confederation, was received with thunderous applause. The President announced the appointment of a committee consisting of Messrs. C.N. Annadurai, E.V.K. Sampath and A.V.P. Asaithambi, with powers to take in two more leaders to tour the State, study the political situation at first hand and submit a report to the Central Executive of the party. Mr. Annadurai, addressing the conference at the conclusion of the four-day session, referred to the verdict of those present and stated that a political party's status would be enhanced by participating in the elections and that they should boldly contest the elections without caring for the results.
