dated May 22, 1956: Buddhist relics unearthed

Buddhist relics, dating back to the second century B.C., have been excavated at Salihundam, a village on the banks of the river Vamsadhara, 12 miles from Srikakulam. From the fragmentary evidence gathered from the inscriptions on potsherds, conches and stones, the present village was known then as Salipetika (emporium of rice).
