IMMUNISATION: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy administering polio drops to children on the occasion of Polio Immunisation Day at Thelarshpet near Pondicherry on Sunday.
Pondicherry: The Health department of Pondicherry held a special drive on Sunday to immunise children below five years against polio. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy inaugurated the drive by administering drops to some children at Thelarshpet in Thattanchavady constituency near here. The health authorities drew up plan to cover an estimated 96,000 children and as many as 416 special booths were opened to administer the oral drops to the children in the Union Territory. One could see mothers bringing their babies right from early morning to the nearest booths to have their children immunised . There were also mobile teams deployed at places, where people would gather, like local bus terminals, railway station and also other public places. With Pondicherry having primary health centres at close quarters there was no difficulty for the residents to have the benefit of immunisation within short distance from their houses. The services of voluntary organisations and anganwadi centres' staff were requisitioned to launch the drive in the Union Territory. Our Vellore Special Correspondent reports:
More children covered
More children in transit were covered in the second round of the pulse polio immunisation programme at Vellore bus stand on Sunday compared to the first round of the programme last month, thanks to the larger number of children leaving Vellore or coming here for the summer holidays. A total of 838 children were covered in the two immunisation booths set up in the bus stand till 5 p.m. on Sunday, as against 638 who were covered during the previous round in the same booths on April 9. In Tiruvannamalai district, out of total estimated number of 2.80 lakh eligible children, about 2.79 lakhs were covered, according to P. Balasubramaniam, Deputy Director of Health Services, Tiruvannamalai.
