Karnataka tops in energy efficiency projects

NEW DELHI: Iron and steel, followed by cement, has emerged as the leading sector for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to get carbon credits, and Karnataka tops the list with 41 such projects in the country.

98 projects approved

According to a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) study, 98 energy efficiency projects have been approved by the National Clean Development Mechanism Authority (CDMA), with Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) of over 70 million expected to be achieved in the next six years.

The CDMA, which has approved these projects as forming part of the top industry sectors in terms of share in energy efficiency, is expecting CERs of 44.12 million for iron and steel and 16.05 million for cement by 2012.The analysis showed that six power plants and five projects in petrochemicals sector are expected to achieve CERs of 2.5 million and 2.1 million, respectively, by 2012.

Expected CERs

In fuel switching, 15 projects relating to power generation, chemicals, fertilizers and glass have been approved with expected CERs of 28 million until 2012.

A total of 71.6 million CERs are expected to be achieved up to 2012 in industrial process projects in the areas of gas flaring, methane recovery, chemicals, food and process modification.

In other States

Karnataka is followed by Andhra Pradesh with 36 projects, Rajasthan 32, Tamil Nadu 29, Maharashtra 25, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat 20, Chattisgarh 18, Himachal Pradesh 10, Orissa 9 and Madhya Pradesh 8, the FICCI said.
