Margao: National league champion Mahindra United concluded its league engagements with a goalless draw against Dempo in the 10th ONGC National Football League here on Sunday. Dempo's Stanley Colaco, who hung his boots at the end of this league, was given a warm send-off by his teammates after the end of the match. Dempo's Joaquim Abrances was nominated the man-of-the-match. With the NFL coming to an end, Mahindra which had clinched the title for the first time, finished its league engagements with 36 points from 17 matches to take the cash award of Rs. 40 lakhs. East Bengal which finished second with 31 points became richer by Rs. 22 lakhs. Dempo finished its league engagements with 25 points from 17 matches. On Saturday, Mohammedan Sporting managed to stay afloat in the elite group while Salgaocar was relegated to the second division after the Kolkata club registered a thumping 4-1 win over the Goan side. Dempo's Ranty Martins, who scored 14 goals, got the golden boot award with a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. The Super Cup match between Mahindra United and East Bengal will be played at the Cooperage ground, Mumbai on May 27.
Air-India held
At Mumbai, Sporting Clube de Goa notched a late equaliser to hold local outfit Air-India 1-1 at the Cooperage ground here on Sunday. Paresh Shivalkar put Air-India ahead in the fifth minute of the match before Joe Rodrigues notched the equaliser for the Goans eight minutes from the end. Air-India custodian Raju Ekka was declared the man-of-the-match. Sporting finished the league with 25 points from 17 matches while Air-India concluded its engagements with 19 points.
Bagan finishes third
At Ludhiana, Mohun Bagan pipped JCT Mills, Phagwara 1-0 at the Guru Nanak stadium. With this victory, Mohun Bagan accumulated 30 points and finished at third place on the league table, pocketing a cash prize of Rs. 6 lakhs. Edwardo Chaconhacerda scored the lone goal for the Kolkata outfit in the 31st minute of the match. Edwardo was declared the man of the match. PTI
