Vaikom Viswan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI (M) State Secretariat on Sunday decided to nominate Vaikom Viswan as the new convener of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). He will replace Paloli Mohammed Kutty, who has become Minister for Local Self-Government in the LDF Government. Mr. Viswan started his political career as an activist of the Kerala Students Federation. He became its State president in 1967 and later its secretary. He had also worked as president of the Kerala State Youth Federation. Mr. Viswan became a member of the party State committee in 1978 and its Kottayam district secretary in 1984 and continued to hold the post till 2005 He was elected to the Kerala Assembly in 1980 from the Ettumanur constituency and had contested unsuccessfully from the same constituency in 1991 and 1996. Mr. Viswan is a member of the party secretariat from 2005 onwards. Party sources said the secretariat also decided to recommend to the party Polit Bureau the name of Democratic Youth Federation of India president K.N. Balagopal for the post of political secretary to the Chief Minister. The name of the IAS officer Sheela Thomas has been proposed for the post of Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister.
