KOZHIKODE: State Human Rights Commission Chairman V.P. Mohan Kumar has recommended to the State Government immediate action to fill vacancies at the Government Mental Health Centre at Kuthiravattam in Kozhikode. This is among the recommendations made by the Commission to improve the condition of the hospital as well as of the patients after a recent visit to the hospital. Mr. Mohan Kumar also underscored the need for a change in the attitude of the hospital authorities towards patients. Stressing the need to ensure that the patients who were cured were sent home without loss of time, the Commission said mental hospital authorities should inform the patients' relatives through police station when it was time to discharge a patient. In case the relatives did not come forward to take the patient home, an employee of the mental hospital should be authorised to escort the patient home, the Commission said in its report submitted to the Government. If any patient had to be given medical care after being discharged from the hospital, the information had to be passed on by the mental hospital authorities to the Government hospital near to his place of residence for necessary action. The Commission also recommended immediate action to shift Kumaran Kallachi, who has been an inmate at the mental hospital in Kozhikode for years, to a rehabilitation centre.
