Rajiv Gandhi remembered

NEW DELHI: Describing Rajiv Gandhi as a great patriot who gave a scientific and technological dimension to the country, Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh paid floral tributes to a painting of the late Prime Minister on his 15th Martyrdom Day at a function at Ambedkar Nagar here on Sunday. He said that Rajiv Gandhi made the supreme sacrifice of his life for the solidarity and harmony of the country.

Tributes paid

NEW DELHI: Tributes were paid to veteran trade union leader and Secretary of Delhi Union of Journalists Suraj Prakash at a meeting organised here on Saturday. Mr. Prakash died recently at the age of 75. A journalist activist, he had spent over 40 years in the profession.

`Sangharsh Vikas padyatra'

NEW DELHI: President of Delhi Pradesh National Congress Party Rajinder Bhardwaj led the fourth phase of the `Sangharsh Vikas padyatra' from Uttam Nagar here on Sunday. Mr. Bhardwaj said the residents of the Mohan Garden area are distressed that there is no provision for burial and cremation of the dead in or around the area. He also charged the Delhi Jal Board with mismanagement of water and demanded that it supply water to those in need.

IGNOU course in Gandhian Studies

NEW DELHI: As part of its ongoing programme to promote Gandhian studies, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is developing a Post Graduate Diploma in Gandhian Studies on Peace and Development. In a statement released here on Sunday, IGNOU said the diploma would be a specialised study for those who are interested in the evaluation and implementation of the Gandhian model of development and conflict resolution. The proposed programme would highlight Mahatma Gandhi's views and perceptions on economic, social, gender, political, environmental and sustainable development issues. Pro-Vice Chancellor IGNOU S.C. Garg said the diploma would initially be offered in English and Hindi.

Preventing heart attacks

NEW DELHI: President of Heart Care Foundation of India K.K. Aggarwal said the parameters for preventing heart attacks in the country have been modified. Quoting the new American heart guidelines for heart attack prevention `2006 Update', he said there are recommended goals to tackle six major risk factors.

Individuals should completely stop smoking and try to avoid exposure to environmental smoke. Dr. Aggarwal also recommended diabetes management, checking body mass index and lowering the target levels for blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol.

Dr. Aggarwal also suggested 30 to 60 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity such as a brisk walk daily.
