Pulse polio drive

New Delhi: A campaign to immunise over 26 lakh children against polio was carried out in the Capital on Sunday. The pulse polio immunisation programme, launched by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday, will continue till May 26, an official spokesman said.

To reach uncovered children and those in transit, the Government had set up camps and deputed teams in hospitals, bus terminals, railway stations, schools and religious places including all 57 Metro stations, at the Akshardham Temple and at many clinics of alternative systems of medicine.

Betting racket busted

NEW DELHI: Three persons who were allegedly running a betting racket on the one-day international cricket match between India and West Indies from a flat at Mandawali in East Delhi were arrested by the Special Staff on Saturday.

According to the police, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sukhbir Singh of the Special Staff received a tip-off on Saturday that some people were running a betting racket on the ongoing India-West Indies one-day cricket match. Subsequently, a team was formed under Inspector Rakesh Dixit, which raided the Mandawali flat from where the business was being managed.

The police arrested Parveen Kumar, Harish Tandon and Manoj Kumar from there while they were receiving calls from their clients. A laptop, nine mobile phones with voice recording facility, a colour television and other electronic gadgets were recovered from the flat. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that Parveen was the brain behind the

betting racket. They would change their base frequently to avoid detection.

Further probe to identify others involved in the racket is on.

Held for chain snatching

NEW DELHI: Two alleged snatchers, including a juvenile, were arrested at Dwarka in South-West Delhi this past Friday. A motorcycle and two mobile phones were recovered from their possession.

The accused, Pramod, and his accomplice, a Class X student, would use motorcycles sent to repairing shops to commit the crimes mainly at Dwarka and Uttam Nagar in West Delhi. He had roped in the juvenile as he was good at driving motorcycles.

Arrested for robbery

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man has been arrested by the Sarojini Nagar police of South-West Delhi on charges of committing robbery.

According to the police, the accused, Shakeel Mohammad, was arrested on May 17. During interrogation, he disclosed that he was an auto-rickshaw driver and that he used to rob the passengers of their valuables. The police claim to have recovered Rs. 2,000 of stolen money from him.

Cultural programme

NEW DELHI: Dayanand Devashram Sangh organised a cultural programme at the Arya Samaj Mandir in Sainik Vihar in West Delhi on Sunday in which about 250 Adivasis from all over the country participated. The event was organised to commemorate the fourth death anniversary of social worker Krishan Chand.

The programme started with a yagna under the presence of Asha Mataji. Then tribal children from Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Orissa and Chhattisgarh presented a colourful cultural programme.
