NEW DELHI: Two leading politicians from Afghanistan and medical tourists from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom recently visited a cosmetic dental surgeon in South Delhi to get their teeth repaired and fixed. With new surgical techniques being adopted by the Indian doctors which not only make the dental procedures almost painless but also extremely quick, for patients abroad India is fast becoming a favoured destination for dental surgery. "For foreigners India is becoming an attractive destination as not only is treatment much cheaper here, Indian doctors are also considered the best in the world," said dental cosmetic surgeon Jitender Arora. Moreover, he pointed out that as German and Swiss implants are being used by him and other doctors here and the best of infrastructure is being provided by them, many foreigners now find India ideal to get themselves treated. And for Indians, he said, the procedures have also become much cheaper than before due to advent of new techniques and spread of technology. "A complete dental implant which used to cost around Rs 40,000 earlier, now only costs about Rs 25,000." Dr. Arora added that now the procedures take very little time. As against three months for a complete implant of all 32 teeth, it now takes just about a week for even the elderly who have lost all their teeth to get a shining new set. Stating that after gaining popularity in many advanced countries, cosmetic dentistry is also finding increasing favour among the beauty conscious individuals, he said, in Delhi colour restoration of teeth is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people want to get the interior and posterior tooth repaired and for those who are in the show business, it has become a must have. "Handling teeth efficiently and effectively so that it becomes an individualised statement in aesthetics is an art. Cosmetic dentistry can bring happiness and satisfaction to people who suffer from complaints like dental caries in interior and posterior teeth, fractured teeth, irregular teeth and replacement of any missing tooth," he said. "Gone are the days when you continued with stains on your teeth caused by fluoride and tetracycline. By the advent of modern techniques such stains can be removed very easily and you can get the natural whiteness and shine of teeth back." With modern dentistry providing digital imaging and digital X-rays to facilitate better diagnosis, Dr. Arora said once the health of teeth and their supporting structures is assured, cosmetic work can begin. "The already available techniques bonding, bleaching, porcelain veneering and virtually invisible braces promise a fix for every flaw. Bleaching the teeth to remove the food stains is the simplest procedure a cosmetic dentist can perform." Dr. Arora said many of the miracles in modern dentistry are accomplished by the process called bonding or direct veneering which is literally sticking new fanged adhesives to the tooth's surface to cover strains, fill in the gaps, thicken or broaden a tooth. "Taking care does not mean you are confined to a diet of liquids and cooked food but it does mean no to certain kind of foodstuff especially if the front teeth are done for example hard stuff like corn or hard toast or chicken which required one to pull with front teeth." However, once the implant is done, Dr. Arora said the new teeth which are firmly entrenched in the bones provide as good a result and feel as real teeth.
