Fisheries Development Board planned
Prakash Kamat
PANAJI
: The Centre will soon set up a National Fisheries Development Board in Hyderabad to study various aspects of supporting tuna and deep-sea fishing. A proposal contemplated was to support private initiatives with equity participation, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Secretary P.M.A. Hakeem said.
Mr. Hakeem was here on Monday to attend the 10th session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission.
The board would primarily concentrate on aquaculture, conservation of marine resources and value addition to fishing. The Government wanted to support fishing considering its potential for earning foreign exchange as also employment generation.
Preliminary estimates of tuna potential and allied resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) had been made and the country was looking forward to develop tuna fishing in the EEZ and international waters of the Indian Ocean, he said.
