El Guerrouj calls it a day

CASABLANCA : Four-time 1,500m World champion and World record holder Hicham El Guerrouj announced his retirement on Monday, saying his that after 16 years of competitive running it was time for a "new life."

A misty-eyed El Guerrouj, 31, who won the 1,500m and 5,000m gold medals at the 2004 Olympics, made the announcement at a brief news conference in Casablanca. "For 16 years, I've done sports. Now I want to start a new life," he told reporters.

He also thanked friends, family and those involved in his career. "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. A thousand thanks," he said in his native Arabic. "I want to say to the Moroccan people that everything is possible."

Besides his four World titles, El Guerrouj holds the World record in the 1,500m and the mile, both indoors and outdoors, and has run the fastest ever 2,000m. — AP
