Charges framed

Lucknow: Police say that a woman, who villagers claimed had allegedly committed "sati" in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh, was suspected to have been forced to jump on to her husband's pyre by her brothers-in-law.

Sources said that Fatehpur police, who had earlier registered a case under Sec. 306 of IPC against Vidyawati's brothers-in-law and about 200 villagers for alleged abetment of crime, have now framed murder charges. While brothers-in-law Ram Vishal and Kartar have been arrested, Prem Lal is still at large.

Police claimed that Vidyawati had planned the murder of her husband Lakhanlal with the help of her lover Rohit with the aim of getting Rs. 10 lakh insurance money. — UNI
