As 5-year-old K. Sivasankaran of Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai was suffering from thalassaemia major, he underwent a successful allogeneic bone marrow transplant at Christian Medical College, Vellore, recently, costing about Rs. 10 lakh, which was mobilised by students of schools and colleges, service organisations and philanthropists as the patient's father, K.S. Kesavan, is an electrician. Since iron load in his body became so high now due to repeated blood transfusion (more than 35 times after the disease was detected), actually done prior to the treatment for thalassaemia major, Sivasankaran now requires regular chelation therapy for 4 years to reduce the iron load, according to Dr. Vikram Mathews, Senior Lecturer, Department of Haematology, CMC, Vellore. For this, he has to be administered with subcutaneous injection (Desferrioxamine 1000 mg once a day), costing about Rs. 1 lakh a year. Hence the poor father requires a minimum of Rs. 4 lakh to save his son. Those who want to salvage the boy may send their contributions to K. Sivasankaran, Christian Medical College No. 208888 - C, C/o The Treasurer, Christian Medical College, Vellore - 632 004 or K. Sivasankaran, Account No. 9158, Central Bank of India, Samathanapuram Branch, Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli - 627 002.
