Bidar: Only one out of every five students who wrote the pre-university examination in Bidar district has passed. Bidar stands at the 28th place among districts in the State with a pass percentage of 21.6 this year.

Of the 9,596 students who appeared for the examination, only 2,021 have passed. Of these, 34 have secured distinction, 974 first class and 711 second class.

The district stood at the 21st place in 2004 with a pass percentage of 41.13and at the 25th place in 2005 with a pass percentage of 41.38.

Officials said the result exposed the quality of education in the district.

"We need to introspect and work hard on improving it," said Deputy Director of Pre-University education R. Mahadevappa.

Strict vigilance

He told presspersons on Tuesday that the examination was conducted amidst unprecedented vigilance and malpractices were minimised.

"In all, 126 students indulging in malpractice were debarred. This may have led to lower results. Colleges should introspect on higher results in the past," he said. There are 99 pre-university colleges in the district. Of them, 16 are government colleges and 25 are aided.

The rest are unaided colleges. Figures reveal that students in unaided colleges have done better than those in aided and government colleges.

Guru Nanak Independent PU college (73 per cent), B.V. Composite College at Hallikhed (59.62 per cent) and Manik PU College at Humnabad (57.44%) have emerged as the top three colleges in the district.

All students of B.R. Ambedkar College in Basavakalyan have failed.

Sources said that the Director of Pre-University Education has sought a report about colleges where the pass percentage is less than 10 per cent.
