Thaksin returns to work

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: Thailand's simmering political crisis appears to have deepened, with the outgoing Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, "resuming" work on Tuesday after a self-imposed exile that lasted about seven weeks. Mr. Thaksin, who offered to resign in the wake of a massive protest vote in the April 2 snap general election, is now understood to have presided over a Cabinet meeting in Bangkok after resuming duty. "I have fully returned to work," Mr. Thaksin was quoted as saying. His reported resumption as Prime Minister comes in the context of the failure of the authorities to set a firm date for a fresh general election.
