Youth National volleyball from tomorrow

BANGALORE: The South East Asian (SEA) Educational Trust Campus, near Whitefield, provides a perfect setting for the Youth National Volleyball championships, which gets underway from May 25.

The six-day event is being revived after nearly six years, under the auspices of the Karnataka Volleyball Association (KVA). In the last Youth Nationals held at Udupi in 1999-2000, Kerala won both the men's and women's titles.

According to Mr. A. Krishnappa, MLA, and chairman of the organising committee, Rs. 50 lakhs has been raised for conducting the event. Seventeen teams in the men's section and 12 in the women's will vie for honours.

The championship will be played in league-cum-knockout basis with top two teams in each of the four groups qualify for the knockout stage.

Mr. S.M. Krishna, Maharashtra Governor, will inaugurate the tournament.

The groupings: Men: Group A: Karnataka, U.P., Jharkhand, M.P. Group B: Kerala, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat. Group C: H.P., Maharashtra, AP, Goa. Group D: West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Assam and Haryana.

Women: Group A: Kerala, Haryana, Maharashtra. Group B: West Bengal, A.P., Goa. Group C: Karnataka, H.P., Chhattisgarh. Group D: Tamil Nadu, M.P. and Jharkhand.

Karnataka teams: Men: Ganesh Rai (capt.), Dharanish Kumar, Hemanth Kumar, Sampath, Girish, Sanoj, Kiran Kumar, Mahesh, Vishwanath, Mohd. Sameer, Vinod and Ravindra.

Coach: Basvaraj Hosamath. Manager: Satish.

Women: Kavya (capt.), Seema, Swetha, Ramya, Vinaya, Mythri, Teena M. Jain, Ashwini, Priyanka, Prithika, Impu Shree, and Rohini.
