BARCELONA: Seven-time Grand Slam tennis champion Roger Federer of Switzerland was chosen `Sportsman of the Year' for the second straight year at the 2006 Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday, giving tennis one of three top honours. Rival Rafael Nadal of Spain won the `Newcomer of the Year' while compatriot Martina Hingis won `Comeback of the Year' awards. Croatian skier Janica Kostelic took the `Sportswoman of the Year' prize after an unprecedented fourth Winter Olympic gold.
Other award winners: Sportsman of the Year: Roger Federer (Switzerland, tennis). Sportswoman of the Year: Janica Kostelic (Croatia, skiing). World Team of the Year: Renault (France, Formula One racing). Newcomer of the Year: Rafael Nadal (Spain, tennis). Comeback of the Year: Martina Hingis (Switzerland, tennis) Alternative Sportsperson of the Year: Angelo D'Arrigo (Italy, hang-gliding) Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability: Ernst Van Dyk (South Africa, wheelchair racing). Lifetime Achievement: Johan Cruyff (Netherlands, soccer). Laureus Spirit of Sport: Valentino Rossi (Italy, motorcycle racing). Laureus Sport for Good: Jurgen Griesbeck (Germany).
