Nayak community meet at Hospet

Staff Correspondent

About two lakh people are expected to participate

  • Eighth anniversary of `pattabhisheka' of Punyanandpuri Swamiji will be held simultaneously
  • Participants will express support to the proposals of the Delimitation Commission

BELLARY: A State-level conference of Valmiki (Nayak) community will be held at Hospet in Bellary district on Sunday.

Celebrations of the eighth anniversary of the "pattabhisheka" of Punyanandpuri Swamiji of Valmiki Gurupeeth Rajanahalli in Chitradurga district will be held along with the conference.

The organisers expect about two lakh people to attend the conference and have made arrangements. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will inaugurate the conference at College Grounds at Hospet at 11.30 a.m.

The conference is significant as a section of political leaders have opposed the proposal of the Delimitation Commission to reserve a majority of Legislative Assembly constituencies in Bellary district for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. Five of the nine Assembly constituencies in the district are reserved for the Scheduled Tribes and two for the Scheduled Castes. The main objective of the conference is to ensure that the community gets its due, N.T. Bommanna, former MLA and chairman of the conference reception committee, said.

Gujjal Hanumanthappa, convenor, said the conference participants would appeal to the Union and State governments to ensure that the benefits of delimitation of constituencies reached the people.

The conference would highlight the need for steps for the social and economic development of the community, he said. Demands, including nomination of a member of the community to the Karnataka Public Service Commission and an authority to develop the Gurupeeth at Rajanahalli in Chitradurga district, would be made, he said.
