Aditya Birla Group to set up aluminium plant

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: Hindalco, the Aditya Birla Group's flagship company, on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Madhya Pradesh Government for a Rs. 7,700-crore greenfield aluminium smelter plant to be set up in Sidhi district of the State.

The MoU was signed by the Managing Director of Hindalco, D. Bhattacharya, and the State Principal Secretary for Commerce and Industry, O. P. Rawat, here in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Finance Minister Raghavji, Public Works Department Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and Revenue Minister Kamal Patel.

The Chief Minister said it was an important day not only for Hindalco and the Aditya Birla Group but also for Madhya Pradesh. "The general perception so far has been that the State lacks behind other States when it comes to infrastructure. It is due to this reason that large number of projects have not gone beyond the MoU stage in the past. The scenario is now changing as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led State Government is fully committed to fulfilling its promises and take the State on the path of rapid development'', he added.

Mr. Chauhan said his Government would extend full cooperation to Hindalco to ensure that they even go for the second phase of expansion with further investment of Rs. 10,200 crores, taking the total investment to Rs. 17,900 crores. The State Government would even go ahead and provide not just a single window but a single- table system for speedy clearance and mandatory approvals, he announced. . "The Managing Director of Hindalco threw light on the linkages between the Aditya Birla Group and Madhya Pradesh. He said that Hindalco had already filed applications for land and related infrastructure to get the project going on schedule.
