Sub-Inspector accused of assaulting scribe

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Probationary Sub-Inspector of Kothacheruvu Sivashankar Naik has allegedly beaten up a news contributor of a Telugu daily P. Venkatesh in a case of alleged manhandling of a youth. The news contributor is undergoing treatment in the General Hospital here.

According to the FIR filed by the news contributor his cellphone was allegedly stolen by the room boy of a lodge at Kothacheruvu on May 14 and along with his friends the news contributor detained the boy and beat him on May 16. The room boy lodged a complaint with the police and the SI picked up Venkatesh at 10.30 a.m. on May 17.

The news contributor was allegedly beaten blue and black by the SI in the lock up. Venkatesh sustained bleeding injuries.

The SI denied beating up Venkatesh when contacted on May 17. However, the hospital had records of the injuries he sustained. The SI had also allegedly snatched the press accreditation card of the reporter.

When the matter was represented to Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain on May 17 by APUWJ, the SP promised to speak to the SI and stated that the SI was a probationer and the alleged beating could be the result of over-enthusiasm. APUWJ stand

The APUWJ told the police that action could be taken against the reporter as per law, if he was guilty of beating up the room boy.
