Plea for reservation on economic grounds

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Pradesh Brahman Sabha passed a resolution here on Tuesday requesting the Government to provide reservation in institutions of higher learning on economic and not caste basis. This would ensure that the benefits of 27 per cent reservation would reach every child of every caste for whom higher education is economically not viable.

"Reservations on the basis of caste would lead to imbalances. Therefore all castes should be considered on economic grounds for their betterment," said Brahman Sabha president Mahinder Sharma.

STC celebrates its golden jubilee

NEW DELHI: The State Trading Corporation of India celebrated 50 years of service at a function in its corporate office here on Monday. Union Communication and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran released STC's golden jubilee special postal cover and presented it to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath. STC's turnover has grown four-fold over the past four years as a result of diversification into new areas of trade.

Nehru Brigade team returns

NEW DELHI: A 51-member `jatha' led by the chief organiser of Nehru Brigade and former Deputy Mayor of Delhi Ramesh Dutta returned here on Tuesday after collecting earth in a `kalash' from `Shaheedi Sthal' of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

The `jatha' has been travelling to Sriperumbudur every year for the past 14 years to collect earth for immersion in holy rivers of various States across the country.

Helicopter service launched

NEW DELHI: Prabhatam Aviation Private Limited launched its helicopter service between Faata and Kedarnath Dham on Tuesday. The facility is expected to be useful for elderly people and devotees who cannot travel by road. The helicopter service will also reduce travel time considerably. Special packages are being made available for devotees travelling in groups. Helicopter services from Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited are also available between Augustmuni and Kedarnath till June 20.

MCD engineer gets bail

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to a junior engineer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi sentenced to one month's simple imprisonment by Delhi High Court for contempt of court. Petitioner R.S. Sherawat was convicted for filing false affidavit in respect to illegal constructions in Sainik Farms houses in Mehrauli area.
